Experts from the Cardiovascular Health Department at Anadolu Health Center provide important information about the effects of heart diseases on sexual life.
Having heart disease does not mean the end of a satisfying sexual life. Although there is a common belief that engaging in sexual activity again could lead to a heart attack or sudden death, the risk is low. Generally, a person who has had heart disease or heart surgery can return to sexual activity when they feel ready, and if they have concerns, they should discuss them with their doctor.
Concerns about reduced sexual performance and the general depression associated with the illness may lead to decreased sexual interest and capacity. This depression is common in heart patients and typically improves within three months. However, this situation can amplify existing problems in the couple's sexual life.
One of the most effective solutions to this problem is for the patient's doctor to offer encouragement. For instance, in the case of a patient who has had a heart attack, advice on this topic is usually provided while the patient is still hospitalized. Doctors are aware of the importance of this issue for the patient and their spouse and may conduct some tests to assess the patient’s ability to return to sexual activity. However, fear is not the only factor that disrupts sexual life. Vascular problems, which often accompany heart diseases, can make it difficult for male patients to achieve an erection. Chest pain, shortness of breath, and palpitations, which are common in heart diseases, may not typically result in dangerous consequences but can interrupt sexual activity.
Patients experiencing chest pain during intercourse may be advised to use sublingual nitrate tablets or spray 5-15 minutes before the relationship. All of this should be discussed with a doctor. Some medications given to heart patients can affect their sexual life. In such cases, the doctor may prescribe alternative medications.
For a patient who has had a heart attack, immediately following the event, the heart's condition is not suitable for sexual intercourse. Sexual activity requires an effort equivalent to quickly climbing two flights of stairs: during this effort, heart rate and blood pressure increase. Many patients require a period of 2-4 weeks before resuming sexual activity. However, each patient should discuss this matter with their doctor. The position in which sexual intercourse takes place is generally not of great importance.
• Do not begin sexual activity when you are nervous or under stress.
• A time when you are rested, relaxed, and away from the stresses of daily life should be preferred for sexual activity.
• Instead of beginning sexual activity immediately after a large meal, it is better to wait 1-3 hours after eating.
• Choose a comfortable place for sexual activity where the relationship will not be interrupted
