Things to Consider About Circumcision

Circumcision, though a religious tradition without a strict medical requirement, is often viewed as a boy’s first step toward adulthood. It is a surgical procedure that can reduce the risk of urinary tract infections, among other health benefits. During circumcision, the foreskin, known as the prepuce, which covers the head of the penis, is surgically removed, exposing the tip of the penis. While circumcision provides significant hygienic benefits, it should be performed under proper sanitary conditions and by skilled professionals using appropriate methods. Although it is a relatively simple procedure, improper circumcision can lead to serious lifelong complications for the chi

When Should Circumcision Be Done?

Circumcision can be performed at any age. However, it is generally not recommended by specialists for children between the ages of 2 and 6, as it may cause psychological trauma. Children in this age group are going through a phase of identity development and may struggle with adaptation. They may develop feelings of anxiety about losing a part of themselves. This period is also marked by a strong dependence on the mother. Between the ages of 7 and puberty, children enter a more stable phase. Experts suggest the best times for circumcision are within the first 20 days after birth or after the age of 6.

When Should Circumcision Be Done in Infants?

Newborn circumcision can be performed to make the healing process easier and to avoid psychological trauma. In the first days of life, a newborn faces various challenges, including feeding, swallowing, breathing, jaundice, and weight loss. These issues tend to decrease after the first week. Additionally, it may take about a week for the mother to recover fully. Caring for the baby after circumcision can strengthen the mother-baby bond. Given all of this, it’s preferable to schedule circumcision at least seven days after birth.

Who Should Perform Circumcision?

In our country, circumcision is performed by doctors, health officers, and professionals known as circumcision specialists. However, it is recommended that urologists, pediatric surgeons, or general surgeons carry out the procedure. Performing circumcision in hospital settings, ideally in an operating room, helps to minimize complications. Although it can be done under local or general anesthesia, in recent years it has been performed primarily under general anesthesia, which helps to protect the child psychologically and shortens the recovery period.

Post-Circumcision Care

After circumcision, a set of medications, including pain relievers (syrups or pills), antibiotics, antiseptics, and gauze, is used. The dressing should be done by a doctor or health professional. During recovery, scabbing, swelling, and redness may occur around the head of the penis. The most important aspect of post-circumcision care is keeping the wound clean and protecting it from external factors. Specially designed circumcision underwear can be helpful. After about a week, it is important for the child to experience a smooth recovery, after which they can resume their daily activities.
