How Much Fruit Should Diabetic Patients Consume?

It is very important for diabetic patients to eat healthily. Emphasizing the importance of balanced fruit consumption in a healthy diet, Nutrition and Diet Specialist Tuba Örnek from Anadolu Health Center stated, “The carbohydrates we consume daily should be complex, and daily energy intake should not exceed 40-50% for everyone who does not have a special condition. This is even more crucial for diabetic patients. Therefore, fruits, which are known to be a healthy source of carbohydrates, should be consumed in specific portions. There is no fruit that we can eat as much as we want.” Nutrition and Diet Specialist Tuba Örnek gave special recommendations for diabetic patients...

Fruits with High Glycemic Index
Fruits like grapes, figs, bananas, melons, watermelons, and dried fruits, which have a high glycemic index and can quickly alter blood sugar levels, may be harmful for some individuals. Other fruits, which are high in fiber, can help balance blood sugar levels when consumed as snacks. A fruit snack can be eaten 2-2.5 hours after the main meal.

Portions Should Be Determined by a Dietitian

Portions should be determined by a dietitian based on the individual's needs and blood sugar levels. Fruit juice should be consumed freshly squeezed, not ready-made. However, since the juice is separated from the pulp, its glycemic index may be higher. Therefore, consuming it in the form of a smoothie with pulp, not exceeding 100 ml as a snack, would be more beneficial.
