Allergic Asthma Symptoms and Treatment

Allergic asthma, which is quite common both worldwide and in our country, is a disruptive condition that negatively affects individuals' quality of life. So, what is allergic asthma?

In this type of asthma, which can be triggered by various factors such as pollen from different plants, mites, dust, and microbes, there is an exaggerated response of the tissues and membranes lining the airways to these triggers. As a result of this response, localized swelling occurs in the airways, leading to their narrowing. This paves the way for issues such as coughing, shortness of breath, and wheezing, which are commonly seen in allergic asthma

What Are the Symptoms of Allergic Asthma?

The most fundamental symptom of allergic asthma is the attacks caused by the narrowing and blockage of the airways. During these attacks, individuals experience shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, and coughing. In addition to the attacks, some symptoms that individuals may encounter in their daily lives include:

  • Dry and persistent coughing spells
  • Wheezing and whistling sounds during breathing
  • A feeling of tightness and constriction in the chest
  • Sleep disturbances

What Causes Allergic Asthma?

Genetic and environmental factors play a role in the development of allergic asthma. The most basic risk factors among these include:

  • A family history of asthma or allergic asthma in previous family members
  • Having experienced severe illnesses affecting the respiratory system during infancy and childhood or having been exposed to allergens intensively
  • Working in occupations that require close contact with allergens that trigger allergic asthma
  • Being heavily exposed to smoke in smoking environments
  • Being born with low birth weight or prematurely

How Does Allergic Asthma Resolve?

For individuals diagnosed with allergic asthma through physical examination, respiratory tests, radiological imaging techniques, and blood tests, appropriate treatment methods can be applied, and by taking certain precautions in daily life, asthma attacks can be prevented. Some medications, the type, duration, and form of which will be determined by a physician, can be used in allergic asthma. Additionally, the most important points individuals should consider to prevent allergic asthma attacks include:

  • Identifying the triggers to which the individual is allergic through allergy tests and avoiding these triggers as much as possible.
  • Regularly ventilating the living environment and avoiding smoking indoors.
  • Avoiding the use of air fresheners, perfumes, and deodorants.
  • Individuals identified as allergic to pets should refrain from keeping animals at home.
  • During the spring seasons when pollen levels rise, windows and doors should be kept closed, and going outside should be minimized when not necessary.
  • Attention should be paid to food allergies, and foods that cause allergic reactions should be eliminated from the diet.

By taking the precautions mentioned above and undergoing regular health check-ups, the symptoms of allergic asthma can be minimized, significantly improving quality of life. Therefore, if you have allergic asthma or suspect that you do, you should consult a physician without delay and begin the recommended treatment.
