What Do Breast Pain and Swelling in Women Indicate?
Ductal ectasia is the dilation and hardening of the milk duct. Dilation of the milk ducts is more commonly observed in women aged 40 and 50.
The patient's complaint typically involves a thick, sticky fluid that is greenish-black in color coming from the nipple. The nipple and the surrounding tissues may appear red and painful. If a mass forms, it may be confused with cancer. Many patients recover spontaneously without any treatment. Simple pain relievers and warm compress applications can be beneficial. Surgical intervention is usually not necessary. Rarely, it may become necessary to surgically remove the dilated milk duct(s).
