The Benefits of Quince

As the likelihood of illness increases during cold weather, strengthening the immune system becomes of great importance.

Strengthening the immune system is crucial, especially as the risk of illness rises in cold weather. The nutrition and diet specialists at Anadolu Health Center emphasized the contribution of fruits to boosting immunity, stating, “Quince is rich in vitamins A, B, C, and potassium, making it protective and healing against many diseases, from cancer to gastrointestinal issues, joint pains to coughs.” Özdemir, explaining that quince contains polyphenolic compounds, antioxidants, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals, said, “100 grams of quince provides 25% of the daily vitamin C requirement. Quince strengthens immunity and helps maintain balanced cholesterol levels. Quince tea or quince juice is beneficial in treating skin wounds, acne, and blemishes.” You can find more details about the benefits of quince in the continuation of our article.

Quince, a member of the “Rosaceae” family, which also includes apples and pears, has numerous benefits. A low-calorie fruit, quince is made up of 80% water. The nutrition and diet specialists at Anadolu Health Center pointed out, “100 grams of quince contains 52-57 calories. Quince contains more polyphenolic and antioxidant compounds than apples and pears, and these compounds are a storehouse of dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals.”

Eat Quince with Its Skin

When it comes to how to consume quince, the nutrition and diet specialists at Anadolu Health Center emphasize that eating quince with its skin increases dietary fiber intake. “As with other fruits, dietary fiber is important for weight control. Quince can be consumed raw, cooked, in the form of jam, marmalade, quince juice, or tea. The fleshy part of the fruit contains tannins, such as catechin and epicatechin, which give quince its astringent taste. These compounds protect against bowel diseases, particularly colon cancer, by binding to toxins and chemicals in the colon and protecting the mucosa,” they said. Özdemir also mentioned that quince has positive effects on digestive system disorders, diarrhea, stomach pains, and nausea, adding, “It is known that quince juice helps with gastric ulcers and relaxes the gastrointestinal system.”

Protects Against Bad Cholesterol and Stress

The nutrition and diet specialists at Anadolu Health Center highlight that quince is rich in vitamin C, stating, “100 grams of quince provides 25% of the daily vitamin C requirement. Fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C help reduce harmful free radicals in the body, protect against stress, and prevent the body from weakening. Additionally, quince strengthens immunity and plays a protective role against diseases by shielding the body from microbes and viruses.” Özdemir mentioned that quince helps maintain balanced LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and blood pressure levels, and it also protects against coronary heart diseases such as artery blockages and heart attacks.

Prevents Kidney Stone Formation

The nutrition and diet specialists at Anadolu Health Center stated that consuming potassium-rich foods like quince helps maintain blood pressure levels. “The potassium content of quince is also important for kidney health. Studies have shown that consuming enough potassium significantly reduces the risk of kidney stone formation,” they explained.

Reduces Pain and Relieves Cough

The nutrition and diet specialists at Anadolu Health Center explained that quince can be applied directly, sliced, to painful joints, wounds, swellings, and nipple pain to alleviate discomfort. “Looking at the benefits of quince for the skin, quince tea or quince juice helps treat skin wounds, acne, and blemishes. By reducing free radicals, it plays a role in providing a healthier and more youthful appearance. For eye pain, thin slices of quince can be placed over the eyes for 10 minutes, or warm quince tea can be applied. Quince juice or tea is effective for relieving coughs and supports the immune system. It can be used for treating colds and flu,” they said.
