Tremors, which can occur in different parts of the body, are involuntary movements caused by contractions of muscles that work in opposition to each other. According to Prof. Dr. Yaşar Kütükçü, Director of the Neurology Department at Anadolu Health Center, excessive caffeine consumption, stress, and fatigue can cause tremors. “Apart from these, systemic and metabolic diseases such as thyroid disorders, low blood sugar, vitamin deficiencies, nutritional imbalances, neurological diseases, and Parkinson’s disease can also cause tremors,” he said.
Tremors are Most Commonly Seen in the Hands and Arms
Tremors most commonly appear in the hands and arms. Fatigue, stress, excessive exercise, or nicotine can cause tremors, but sometimes tremors may signal an underlying disease. Prof. Dr. Yaşar Kütükçü emphasized that the cause of tremors must always be investigated. “However, in essential tremor, which we do not fully understand the cause of, there are medications available that can reduce the tremors,” he said. He also pointed out that there is no definitive cure for tremors but stressed the importance of reducing caffeine and other stimulants that could increase tremors.
Prof. Dr. Yaşar Kütükçü, Director of the Neurology Department, noted that thyroid diseases, low blood sugar, and vitamin deficiencies can also cause hand tremors. “Additionally, tremors can be a symptom of other neurological diseases. Therefore, patients who experience persistent tremors should consult a neurologist without delay,” he explained. Prof. Dr. Kütükçü added, “Parkinson’s disease, polyneuropathies, dystonia, cerebellar diseases, brain vascular diseases, trauma, metabolic disorders, nutritional imbalances, medications, and toxins can also lead to tremors.”
Prof. Dr. Yaşar Kütükçü explained that essential tremor is a type of tremor that is very common in society, but its exact cause is not well understood, and it usually occurs without other neurological signs. "It is most commonly seen in the hands and head, and less frequently in the feet and even in the voice while speaking. Its frequency increases with age. In Turkey, about 5% of people over 50 experience it," he stated.
Prof. Dr. Kütükçü emphasized that tremors are most noticeable when using the hands and performing tasks, such as eating, drinking tea or coffee, writing, or carrying something. “Tremors become more pronounced when the arms and hands are in specific positions. An important feature of this condition is that more than half of the patients have a genetic predisposition,” he added. He mentioned that tremors that begin mildly can become more pronounced over time. “Patients often do not seek medical help unless tremors cause disability, but it is crucial not to delay treatment,” he advised.
According to Prof. Dr. Yaşar Kütükçü, many people worry about Parkinson's disease when they first experience tremors. “Tremors are significant in Parkinson’s disease, but it is not possible to diagnose Parkinson's disease based solely on tremors. In Parkinson’s disease, tremors are accompanied by additional symptoms such as slowness of movement, muscle rigidity, walking difficulties, and balance problems. There may also be many other signs unrelated to movement. Therefore, it is essential to consult a neurologist for an examination and, if necessary, undergo further tests to rule out other possible diagnoses,” he explained.
