Excessive Caffeine and Stress as Causes of Tremors
Disturbances in sleep due to various reasons can lead to complaints related to both the night and day, as well as various health problems. Symptoms of sleep disorders such as snoring, breathing pauses during sleep, and insomnia are often considered "normal" by society. Sleep disorders are significant in terms of both individual and societal consequences. Therefore, these issues should not be neglected.
A person suspected of having a sleep disorder based on their complaints spends a night at the Sleep Laboratory. However, this place looks more like a comfortable hotel room than a laboratory. This is because it is crucial for the person to feel relaxed to fall asleep. A minimum of 6 hours of sleep data is recorded in the laboratory. Before starting the sleep examination, the patient is prepared for the test through a process that takes about 40 minutes. During this preparation, electrodes are placed on the patient's head to record brain waves, devices are attached to the nose to monitor breathing and snoring, heart electrodes are placed for heart rate, and leg and chin electrodes are used to monitor muscle activity. Special belts are placed around the chest and abdomen to track respiratory movements, and a small device is attached to the finger to monitor blood oxygen levels and pulse. The patient's sleep is recorded with all these parameters under video monitoring. All electrodes and bands placed do not interfere with the patient's movement.
To help patients adapt to the environment and devices, it is recommended that they spend some time in the polysomnography room before the test. When the patient falls asleep, the polysomnography technician turns off the lights and monitors the sleep data in real-time on a computer from a separate room. If necessary, or when the patient presses the call button, the technician is present by the patient's side. Throughout the night, the patient’s respiratory events, leg and chin EMG, heart rhythm, blood oxygen level and pulse, eye movements, abdominal and chest effort, snoring, sleep stages, and sleeping position are recorded simultaneously with the camera. The patient can continue with their daily life the next day.
