10 Ways to Prevent Urinary Tract Infections During Pregnancy

Pregnancy-related changes in the urinary system can lead to an increase in urinary tract infections (UTIs). Dr. Meltem Çam, an Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Anadolu Medical Center, explained that if left untreated, UTIs can lead to kidney infections. "Kidney infections can cause premature labor and low birth weight in babies. However, if treated early and appropriately, these infections will not harm the baby," she stated.

Urinary tract infections may increase due to changes in the urinary system that occur during pregnancy. Dr. Meltem Çam emphasized that if UTIs are left untreated, they can lead to kidney infections, which can result in premature birth and low birth weight. "If the infection is treated early and properly, there will be no harm to the baby," she explained.

Dr. Çam also highlighted that the growing uterus during pregnancy presses against the bladder, preventing it from emptying fully. This leads to urine remaining in the bladder for extended periods, increasing the risk of infections. "The risk of urinary tract infections is higher between the 6th and 24th weeks of pregnancy," Dr. Çam added.

Treatment is Administered in a Way That Does Not Harm the Baby

Dr. Meltem Çam, an Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Anadolu Medical Center, emphasized that if symptoms such as pain and burning during urination, increased frequency of urination, blood in the urine, lower abdominal cramps and pain, fever, chills, and pressure or tenderness in the bladder occur, it is important to consult a doctor. "Antibiotics are used for treatment. The antibiotics chosen are selected in a way that will not harm the baby," she explained. Dr. Çam provided the following recommendations for pregnant women:

  • Drink 6-8 glasses of water per day.
  • Blueberry extracts can be used.
  • Avoid consuming caffeine, alcohol, refined sugar, and ready-made fruit juices.
  • Vitamin C (250-500 mg per day), beta-carotene (25,000-50,000 units per day), and zinc (30-50 mg per day) help reduce the risk of infection.
  • Urinate frequently and ensure the bladder is completely emptied.
  • Urinate before and after intercourse.
  • If there is a urinary tract infection, avoid sexual intercourse.
  • Clean the genital area regularly, from front to back. Avoid using harsh soaps and chemicals. Change underwear frequently. Avoid tight clothing and opt for cotton underwear.
  • Avoid staying wet in the bath for more than 30 minutes.
