Is It Right to Delay Your Period?

Many women try to organize their period dates around special times, such as holidays or exam days, and resort to various methods to delay their period. Dr. Nuri Ceydeli, a Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Anadolu Health Center, states that they do not highly recommend delaying periods, saying, "It is possible to delay the period with certain medications, but this delay will not reduce the psychological effects of the period on the person." Menstrual periods, which can cause many symptoms such as pain and stress, making it difficult for women, are most commonly delayed during the holiday season. However, delaying the period does not reduce the discomfort experienced during this time; it only stops or, in some cases, reduces the bleeding.

Before the expected period date, certain medications can either bring the period forward or delay it. If a woman is already using birth control pills, it is possible to go through this period without bleeding by taking the pills continuously.

Exam Stress Doesn’t Listen to Medication

Due to seasonal changes coinciding with the exam period, mood swings, and intense stress, sometimes bleeding cannot be stopped despite the use of medication. It is not always possible to completely stop bleeding with medication. Spotting or early bleeding may occur. While medications used to delay the period may help reduce stress, the body’s natural hormonal cycle continues, preventing the desired effect. For someone facing excessive stress before an exam, simply delaying the menstrual period will not significantly change their mental state. Only a slight reduction in bleeding may be achieved. Since the anxiety from daily life continues, there will be no positive impact in this regard.

Consult a Doctor First

Before using medication to delay or bring the period forward, it is essential to have a gynecological check-up. While it is common for women to recommend medications to each other, this is a very wrong approach. Not everyone may be suitable for altering their cycle, and there is the possibility that timing cannot be adjusted. A doctor needs to confirm that using these medications will not cause any harm.

Reducing Unexpected Period Bleeding Is Possible

It is not possible to completely stop an existing period, but the amount of bleeding can be reduced during periods that start unexpectedly. Hormonal medications can reduce the period length for a woman who usually has a 6-7 day cycle to just 2-3 days and reduce the amount of bleeding. During holidays, there are certain considerations to keep in mind. For example, it is not recommended to visit places like the sea, pool, sauna, or Turkish bath during menstruation. While it is possible to enjoy the sea by using tampons, they should be changed every two hours.
