What is Mediterranean Fever (FMF Disease)? What Are the Symptoms of FMF?

Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is a genetic disease primarily seen in Mediterranean countries. It is commonly found among Jews of Eastern European descent, Sephardic Jews, Spaniards, Greeks, Armenians, Arabs, and Turks. Although there is an ethnic predisposition, this disease can also affect other populations. The severity of lifelong FMF varies from person to person. Despite being known as Mediterranean Fever, it is more prevalent in the Central Anatolia region in our country.

What is Mediterranean Fever (FMF) disease?

FMF, which occurs due to a mutation in a gene known as MEFV, is an inflammatory disease characterized by recurring episodes of fever, pain, and inflammation in the lungs, joints, and abdomen. This disease, often diagnosed in childhood, is identified by a rheumatology specialist. The specialist listens to the patient's symptoms and performs a physical examination. Blood tests taken during an attack help confirm the diagnosis of FMF by revealing the extent of inflammation in the body. The most definitive diagnostic method is FMF genetic testing, which examines mutations in the MEFV gene responsible for the disease.

Symptoms of Mediterranean Fever

There is no definitive cure for FMF Disease. The goal of treatment is to stabilize the patient’s general condition and to prevent symptoms and attacks with prescribed medications. Colchicine, a commonly used drug for FMF attacks, is highly effective in treating FMF. When taken regularly at the appropriate dose, it can reduce FMF symptoms, as well as the intensity and frequency of attacks. Patients who do not adhere to regular treatment with colchicine may experience deterioration in kidney function and other organs over time.

Recommendations for FMF

  • Regular Sleep: Consistent sleep and rest can help reduce the intensity of FMF attacks.
  • Regular Exercise: Routine exercise is essential for minimizing disease complications. A moderate-paced 45-minute walk at least three days a week is recommended.
  • Healthy Eating: A balanced diet, prepared by a nutritionist according to the patient’s lifestyle, height, weight, and gender, can reduce the severity and frequency of attacks.
  • Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Exposure to extreme cold or heat can trigger inflammation in the joints.
  • Adequate Water Intake: Sufficient hydration is essential.
  • Vitamin D: Deficiency in vitamin D can increase attacks in FMF patients; if there is a deficiency, supplementation may be considered under medical supervision.
  • Avoid Harmful Habits: Stay away from harmful substances like tobacco that negatively affect circulation, as well as drinks with toxins such as alcohol and carbonated beverages.
