Eye Problems May Increase During Pregnancy
As advancements in technology align with daily life, developments in the field of ophthalmology also yield promising results. Dr. Yusuf Avni Yılmaz, an Eye Diseases Specialist at Anadolu Health Center, states that the advantage of smart lens surgeries is providing patients the ability to see both far and near without glasses. He also mentions, “This method should not be applied to individuals with eye diseases other than cataracts or refractive errors.” Dr. Yusuf Avni Yılmaz answered questions regarding smart lens treatment.

6 Questions About Smart Lens Treatment What is a "Smart Lens"? In which eye problems is it used? What are its advantages? How does the method work? Can you briefly explain the surgical procedure? What is the success rate? How much does it affect the patient's quality of life? Which patients do you especially recommend this to? Are there things patients should pay attention to after the procedure? When can they return to their normal lives? The term “smart lens” is actually used only in our country. The application referred to is used worldwide. For instance, in the USA, the term “trifocal intraocular lens” is quite common. There is no “intelligence” in the lens; the application is a “multifocal” lens. This application is similar in principle to multifocal glasses and contact lenses. The term used in our country should be “multifocal lens application” instead of “smart lens,” as it is globally recognized. This is because when people hear “smart,” they may mistakenly think it refers to a very different technique that can solve all visual problems for any reason. However, while there are many causes of visual problems, this method can only correct issues resulting from a few specific reasons.
This application is performed during traditional cataract surgery. Previously, only single-focus lenses were used in cataract surgeries. In this case, we could only adjust the patient's vision for one focus (either distance or near). This is also the case with glasses. Those with both distance and near vision problems can either use two separate pairs of glasses or a single pair that provides both functionalities. Today, for some patient groups, multifocal lenses can be applied even without cataracts if the patient does not want to use glasses, allowing for both distance and near vision.
These lens surgeries provide patients who wish to see without glasses with the ability to do so for both near and distance vision.
The surgical procedure is similar to a routine cataract operation, except that after the patient’s natural lens is removed, a multifocal lens is placed instead of a single-focus lens. However, detailed examinations and measurements are conducted beforehand. Determining which patients are suitable for this procedure is very important.
If the appropriate patient is selected, the success and satisfaction rates are quite high. If applied to unsuitable patients, dissatisfaction can be significant.
This method is not applicable to every patient and should not be. It should not be applied to individuals with eye diseases other than cataracts or refractive errors. For example, patients with macular degeneration (age-related macular degeneration), glaucoma (eye pressure), those who have previously undergone refractive surgery (laser), those with diabetic retinal disorders, corneal problems, and younger patients with myopia should not undergo this method.
The post-procedure process is the same as after routine cataract surgery. Just like after cataract surgery, patients can return to their normal lives within a few days to a week, depending on their work and living conditions. After the surgery, eye drops need to be used for approximately 2 weeks to a month.
