Astigmatism is a visual problem characterized by blurred and distorted vision due to the cornea of the eye taking on an oval shape. The word itself means "without a point."
Astigmatism is a visual problem that presents itself as blurred and wavy vision caused by the oval shape of the cornea. Literally, it means "without a point." A person perceives a point as scattered and spread out. Astigmatism can arise from genetic origins or congenital reasons. Although very rarely, it can also occur due to pressure from masses on the eyelids. Astigmatism can exist alone or in conjunction with myopia or hyperopia. If the distorted image reflected in the eye remains entirely in front of the retina, it is called myopic astigmatism, whereas if it falls behind the nerve layer, it is referred to as hyperopic astigmatism.
Astigmatism is confirmed by an eye doctor's examination. Regardless of how significant the issue is, it can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Refractive surgery is also an option. If an adult has low-degree astigmatism without any issues related to myopia or hyperopia, they may not need to wear glasses as long as they have no complaints. However, if there is a contrary history, the eye doctor may recommend glasses, contact lenses, or surgical methods. In surgical procedures, the structure of the cornea is altered, eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses for the patient for a lifetime.
