13 Foods That Help with Macular Degeneration
In addition to common symptoms in pregnant women such as morning sickness, back pain, fatigue, constipation, itching, and swollen feet, complaints of blurred vision can also occur. Anadolu Medical Center Ophthalmologist Dr. Yusuf Avni Yılmaz states that in most cases, vision returns to normal after childbirth. "Most causes are related to the fluctuating hormonal state. However, it is crucial to identify the cause before drawing any conclusions. Hypertension or gestational diabetes that occur during pregnancy can also lead to temporary or progressive eye damage. Treating these conditions is important to prevent potential harmful situations," he explained. Dr. Yusuf Avni Yılmaz provided information about the eye issues that may occur during pregnancy.
Pregnancy Hormones Can Affect the Eyes
According to a survey, when asked, "What is the most incredible part of feeling motherhood?" 56% of mothers responded that it was seeing their baby for the first time, 19% said hearing their baby’s heartbeat for the first time, and 14% mentioned feeling their baby kick for the first time. However, 39% of pregnant women were unaware that vision problems could occur during pregnancy. While there are many causes of blurred vision under normal circumstances, the most prominent reason is pregnancy hormones. Throughout pregnancy, fluid retention affects the entire body, including the eyeball. This thickens the cornea, which results in blurred vision. Another effect of these hormones is that they reduce tear production, which decreases visual sharpness.
Problems Should Be Diagnosed and Treated
Conditions such as hypertension (preeclampsia) or gestational diabetes that arise during pregnancy can also lead to temporary or progressive eye damage. Along with blurred vision, issues like light sensitivity and a burning or stinging sensation in the eyes, which affect quality of life, can arise. In such cases, it is important to diagnose the issue and begin treatment promptly to improve life comfort and prevent potential harmful outcomes.
During pregnancy, changes in the cornea can also reduce the tolerance of contact lens users to their lenses. In such cases, switching to glasses may be beneficial. The degree of existing vision problems may temporarily change during pregnancy. Patients may find that their previous glasses or lenses no longer provide clear vision. If glasses need to be changed, it’s best not to opt for expensive lenses, as this condition is temporary and will return to normal once the hormonal effects of pregnancy subside.
Migraine Attacks May Increase During Pregnancy
Migraine attacks may increase during pregnancy. To reduce light sensitivity, wearing sunglasses is recommended. In the case of dry eyes, artificial tears can be safely used to address the condition. In conclusion, eye exams are important when vision problems or other eye complaints arise during pregnancy. While most of these complaints are due to physiological changes, some may require treatment. Extra caution should be exercised, especially in cases of hypertension and diabetes.
