Eye Problems May Increase During Pregnancy
Glaucoma, commonly known as eye pressure, is a significant eye disease that can lead to permanent vision loss if necessary treatments are not applied or are delayed. Op. Dr. Yusuf Avni Yılmaz, an Eye Diseases Specialist at Anadolu Medical Center, shared that “most types of glaucoma do not cause pain and may show no symptoms, even leading to vision loss. Regular eye examinations are the only way to detect glaucoma before permanent vision loss occurs.”
Op. Dr. Yusuf Avni Yılmaz, an Eye Diseases Specialist at Anadolu Medical Center, explains that glaucoma is defined as damage to the eye nerves resulting from the intraocular fluid pressure rising well above normal levels. He warns that factors such as being in your 40s, having a family history of glaucoma, problems with focusing in the eyes, corticosteroid use, thin corneal structure, circulatory disorders, diabetes, hypertension, and migraines can predispose individuals to glaucoma.
Emphasizing that the treatment of glaucoma, or eye pressure, varies depending on the patient's condition and the severity of the disease, Eye Diseases Specialist Op. Dr. Yusuf Avni Yılmaz stated, "While the treatment options may differ based on conditions, the most universally accepted options are medication, laser treatment, and surgery. In some cases, not just one of these options is chosen, but they are applied together. The primary goal of treatment is to stop the progression of the disease and protect the patient from vision loss. Therefore, if treatment is delayed, any vision loss that has occurred cannot be recovered."
Op. Dr. Yusuf Avni Yılmaz mentioned that the most common treatment method for glaucoma is medication, specifically eye drops. "The aim here is to lower the elevated intraocular pressure and prevent damage to the optic nerves. If used continuously and with discipline, eye drops can be an effective treatment method. Therefore, patients need to be educated about the importance and seriousness of this issue and thoroughly reminded. In cases where medication is insufficient and the condition continues to progress despite treatment, surgical methods may be considered," he explained.
