The Liver's Best Friends: Grapefruit and Lemon
A lump under the armpit is a common issue that nearly everyone encounters at some point in their life.
Although the lump under the armpit may cause concern about the possibility of cancer, there are also various other reasons for the swelling.
Lumps, swellings, and nodules under the armpit are generally considered normal and do not cause any problems. Here are the reasons for lumps under the armpit:
Furuncles: Infected Hair Follicles
The most common cause of lumps under the armpit is furunculosis, or inflamed hair follicles. Furuncles caused by ingrown hairs occur when sweat cannot escape from the root, leading to bacterial formation. Sweat glands become inflamed, and swellings of varying sizes form under the armpit. These swellings may either go away on their own over time or turn into cysts that cause significant discomfort. To prevent sweat gland infections under the armpit, it is essential to keep the skin pores open in this area. Care should be taken when removing underarm hair to prevent hair follicles from becoming trapped beneath the skin. Shaving under the arms rather than waxing reduces the risk of inflammation. It is also advisable to avoid chemical-based deodorants and roll-ons, as they can harm the sensitive skin in this area.
Swollen Lymph Nodes
Lymphadenitis, known as swollen lymph nodes, is another cause of swelling under the armpit. The armpit area is rich in lymphatic vessels. These lymphatic vessels filter and purify lymph fluid before it enters the bloodstream. Lymph nodes, which play a vital role in the body’s fight against infections, can become inflamed and cause swelling under the armpit when the body’s defense is weakened or when a virus infects the body. Swollen lymph nodes are typically caused by bacterial skin infections and may result in painful swelling under the armpit. If a swollen lymph node is detected under the armpit, it is important to see a specialist immediately. The doctor will analyze the lymph fluid from the swollen lymph node to identify the cause of inflammation and determine the appropriate treatment method.
Cancer
Another cause of lumps under the armpit is cancer. Specifically, blood cancer, breast cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and Hodgkin lymphoma can lead to the formation of lumps under the armpit. Early diagnosis and effective treatment can achieve nearly 90% success. Cancer cells in the body can reach the lymph nodes under the armpit via lymph fluid, causing the lymph nodes in this area to enlarge. The presence of a lump, nodule, or swelling under the armpit in cancer patients is critical. If left untreated, cancer cells in this area can spread throughout the body via lymphatic vessels and lymph fluid.
