If You Wake Up with Pain in the Morning, Pay Attention
Relevant Medical Speciality
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department Review Medical SpecialityCancer rehabilitation involves therapeutic practices aimed at addressing physical impairments caused by the effects of the tumor or cancer treatment. Approximately 54% of patients diagnosed with cancer require rehabilitation.
About 70% of cancer patients experience pain. This pain is largely due to direct tumor spread, and treatments targeting the tumor are effective in managing such pain.
Pain Management in Cancer
In cases of bone involvement, weight-bearing may need to be restricted based on the severity of the lesion. The use of crutches or walkers is recommended to restrict weight-bearing. Bed rest is not advised. To protect the bone, the application of orthoses and the use of a brace for the spine are suitable.
Exercise Therapy in Cancer
Strengthening exercises for muscles that do not generate movement, low-intensity aerobic exercises (such as walking or cycling), strengthening of abdominal and back muscles in patients at risk of spinal fractures, balance exercises to prevent falls, and environmental modifications are recommended.
In the rehabilitation program for breast cancer, joint range-of-motion exercises for the shoulder and stretching exercises are performed post-surgery. Active joint range-of-motion exercises are initiated once the drains are removed, and movements are gradually advanced. Lymphedema therapy is applied, including manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy (compression bandage - compression garments), therapeutic lymphedema exercises, and skin care.
For lung tumors, respiratory exercises, strengthening exercises for the neck and arm muscles, and aerobic exercises are recommended. In patients who have undergone radiation therapy for head and neck cancers, limitations in neck movement may develop. Range-of-motion exercises in all directions for the neck joints, stretching exercises, strengthening the muscles at the back of the neck, and posture training are applied.
