If You Wake Up with Pain in the Morning, Pay Attention
Relevant Medical Speciality
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department Review Medical SpecialityThe sensation of numbness, tingling, and pricking often experienced in the fingers, toes, arms, and around the head is known as paresthesia, which can occur as a chronic or temporary condition. Temporary paresthesia results from prolonged pressure on the nerves and usually resolves quickly once the pressure is relieved. This condition, often manifesting as symptoms like tingling in the feet or numbness in one arm after staying in one position for too long, is generally not considered a serious health problem. However, if tingling in the right or left arm, numbness in the fingertips, or tingling in the face or head occurs without prolonged positioning, it may indicate an underlying neurological issue.
Tingling in the body arises from pressure or compression on the nerves, and many conditions can lead to nerve damage and subsequent tingling. Common neurological causes include diabetic neuropathy, alcohol dependence, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis (MS), encephalitis, transverse myelitis, and stroke. These conditions cause nerve damage in specific parts of the body, leading to symptoms like tingling, numbness, prickling, and burning.
Orthopedic causes can also result in nerve damage and related paresthesia. Nerve damage is common following traumatic injuries and can cause more significant complaints beyond tingling. Common orthopedic causes of tingling include certain bone fractures, osteoporosis, neck or back injuries, herniated spinal discs, carpal tunnel syndrome, and degenerative disc damage.
Certain psychiatric conditions may also lead to nerve compression or pressure in various body parts. In particular, about 80% of individuals with panic attacks experience nerve compression before or during an attack, leading to symptoms such as numbness, tingling, pricking, and skin burning.
Frequent and recurrent tingling and numbness can disrupt daily life, so effective treatment is necessary. Paresthesia arising from neurological, orthopedic, or psychiatric causes typically involves nerve issues that cause sensory loss without movement restrictions. However, if intermittent or constant movement restrictions occur in the affected area, it is important to seek medical advice and apply the most effective treatment methods promptly.
