If You Wake Up with Pain in the Morning, Pay Attention
Relevant Medical Speciality
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department Review Medical SpecialityThe hip is a body part that contains three major muscle groups. The quadriceps muscle group located in the lower part of the leg helps in straightening and extending the leg, while the hamstring group in the back of the hip helps stretch the leg backward. The muscle group located on the inner part of the hip helps move the hip forward and backward.
Excessive weight caused by poor eating habits and a lack of physical activity can lead to damage in the hip joints. Damage to the hip joints causes hip pain. Hip joint arthritis and cartilage damage, which are more common in women aged 50 and above, are also among the causes of hip pain. Tendinitis, inflammation of the bursae (which serve as cushions for the joints), and diseases such as osteoporosis, which result from damage to the ligaments in the hip joints, are other causes of hip pain. In addition to hip fractures seen in older adults and osteoporosis patients, aseptic necrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, circulation problems, polymyalgia rheumatica, ankylosing spondylitis, and osteoarthritis are also causes of hip joint pain. Chronic conditions like diabetes can cause joint pain, and hip pain related to diabetes can radiate to the legs. Physical activities that lead to excessive strain, such as weightlifting, and herniated discs can also cause hip pain. If the hip pain radiates to the leg and is accompanied by numbness or tingling, sciatica pain in the hip may be present.
Intense exercises, standing in the same position for long periods, or lack of conditioning can cause pain in the hip muscles, making walking difficult. Applying ice compresses to the affected area can help stop the pain. Applying ice every 2-3 hours for 10-15 minutes can reduce the pain. Massaging the painful area is also very effective. Massaging from the knee toward the hip with the hands helps relax the muscles. If there is a knot during the massage, placing the thumb on the knot and gently massaging in circular motions can help eliminate it. Elevating the legs with a pillow under the heels can reduce hip pain and is also beneficial for reducing inflammation in the area. Using non-steroidal pain relievers can minimize the pain and reduce swelling. During intense pain, avoiding exercise helps prevent muscle tears. Hip exercises can be done to prevent pain in the hip muscles. It is recommended to walk for 10-15 minutes before starting exercises, and to do stretching or stretching movements for 5-10 minutes after the exercise. If the pain persists despite all these measures and gets worse, it is necessary to consult a specialist doctor.
