Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department Review Medical SpecialityExercises improve posture, strengthen muscles, enhance flexibility, and increase endurance and aerobic capacity. The exercise program is specifically tailored by the physical therapy specialist based on the patient's needs and functional impairments. The therapist teaches the planned exercises to the patient and ensures that they perform them correctly under their supervision. Performing exercises correctly is important for reducing pain and ensuring the patient's safety. The exercise program should be personalized (individual), improve function, and be safe for the patient. Exercise therapy can be divided into two categories: preventive exercises and therapeutic exercises.
This is an exercise program designed to preserve an individual's physical function, prevent injuries, and improve overall well-being and fitness.
These exercises aim to treat physical functional impairments such as pain, muscle weakness, joint movement restrictions, posture abnormalities, balance and gait disorders.
Treatment with Pilates Exercises
In the treatment of posture disorders, back pain, and fibromyalgia, Pilates exercises are modified and incorporated into the physical therapy exercise program. The focus is on coordinating breathing with the exercises, strengthening posture and the core. Pilates strengthens muscles, improves flexibility, and corrects posture. Pilates exercises include breathing exercises, abdominal muscle strengthening and stabilization, strengthening back muscles, mobilization and strengthening of the muscles around the shoulder blades, relaxation exercises, and stretching exercises.
Posture abnormalities, which often become habitual during sitting and standing in daily life, can lead to pain by putting strain on the muscles, ligaments, and joints around the spine. Pilates exercises aim to correct these posture abnormalities. Strengthening the back and abdominal muscles helps stabilize the region.
Safety is one of the fundamental considerations, whether exercises are performed under the supervision of a physiotherapist or independently.
What factors affect the patient's safety during exercise?
The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) specialist plans a safe exercise program by considering all these factors and ensures patient safety by monitoring these factors during exercise. It is important to educate patients who exercise at home or in a gym on how to ensure their safety.
