Botox

Botox is an FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment method used for the treatment of wrinkles caused by facial expression muscles. With Botox applications, the number of surgical facelift operations in many countries, including the United States, has been steadily decreasing. This treatment successfully addresses forehead wrinkles, crow's feet, drooping eyebrows, and neck bands. Botox is a painless treatment, and the person can resume daily activities immediately after the procedure. A maximum of 60 units of original Botox is used in one session, with treatment intervals of approximately 6 months. For aesthetic results, consultation between the doctor and patient is important, and the primary focus is on reducing wrinkles while maintaining a natural appearance.

What Wrinkles Can Botox Treat?

Botox treatment is most effective for wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes, and between the eyebrows. It can also be used to treat laugh lines, neck, and nape wrinkles.

How Long Has Botox Treatment Been Used?

Botox has been successfully used by ophthalmologists for many years to treat strabismus and lazy eye. In recent years, the use of Botox has increased due to its noticeable effects in improving wrinkles caused by facial expressions.

How Do Wrinkles Form?

Some wrinkles are caused by the contraction of muscles beneath the skin, which leads to the skin being folded. When these muscles relax, wrinkles diminish or disappear entirely.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox contains botulinum toxin A, a substance produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum, which causes a dangerous disease known as botulism. Botulinum toxin is a neuromuscular blocking agent, meaning that when injected into the muscle, it causes paralysis by preventing the release of acetylcholine, a chemical that facilitates communication between nerves and muscles. When the muscles cannot be stimulated by the nerve, paralysis occurs. Once the nerve regenerates, the muscle begins to function again. This same mechanism can be used to block sympathetic nerve endings for the treatment of excessive sweating.

How is Botox Applied?

Botox applications are performed under the supervision of our specialized doctors in our clinic. It does not require anesthesia. The Botox application is painless and leaves no trace at the injection site. During the procedure, small amounts of Botox are injected into the muscles just beneath the skin using fine needles. After the application, there will be no visible change at the treatment area, and the patient can immediately return to their normal daily activities.

When Does the Effect of Botox Start and How Long Does It Last?

The effects of Botox are visible within 2-7 days. These effects last for 3-6 months, after which new injections are needed. Studies have shown that consecutive injections prolong the intervals between treatments.

What Should Be Done After the Procedure?

To maximize the effect of Botox, attention should be given to certain precautions. First, the treatment area should not be touched for 2-3 hours. Second, the patient should remain in an upright position for 2-3 hours. Third, patients should perform specific facial exercises for 2-3 hours. This process ensures that Botox is absorbed by the appropriate muscles and nerves. For maximum benefit, patients should raise their eyebrows for forehead wrinkles, frown their brows for wrinkles between the eyebrows, and squint for crow's feet.

What Are the Side Effects of Botox?

Since the toxin is injected in very small amounts, the treatment is safe and the side effects are minimal. A slight burning sensation may occur in half of the patients during the injection. Bruising at the injection site is rare. Other side effects include drooping eyelids and brows. Eyelid drooping occurs in 1% of cases and typically resolves within four weeks.

Who Can Receive Botox?

Botox can be applied to almost anyone. Botox is a very safe agent. As Botox is a simple procedure, it can be easily performed in a clinical setting, preventing patients from wasting time. Wrinkles that develop over time can be improved within a week with Botox treatment. If Botox is applied to the appropriate wrinkles, the results are far more successful than other cosmetic methods.
