What Helps Diaper Rash? What Causes Diaper Rash? How Can Diaper Rash Be Prevented?

Diaper rash is a common type of rash that typically appears in the diaper area of babies. Depending on its severity, diaper rash can be treated at home or with the help of a doctor. To prevent this rash, it’s important to understand its causes and take appropriate measures accordingly.

What Are the Symptoms of Diaper Rash?

Diaper rash has several symptoms, with one of the most common being redness and sensitivity in the baby's diaper area. The redness may cover the entire area or appear in specific spots. Babies with diaper rash may feel discomfort when the area is touched and might cry. If the rash progresses, pimples, blisters, or other sores may form. When there is an infected rash, it becomes bright red, and swelling is likely to occur on the skin. As the condition worsens, the redness can spread beyond the initial spots, sometimes even beyond the diaper area. This is why it’s important to consult your doctor at the first sign of diaper rash. It’s recommended to contact your doctor again if:

  • Pimples appear,
  • The rash starts to bleed,
  • The baby has a fever,
  • The rash spreads to other areas like the arms, face, or scalp,
  • The rash worsens despite home treatment,
  • It occurs within six weeks after birth.

What Causes Diaper Rash?

There are several causes of diaper rash, including:

  • Dirty diapers: When wet or dirty diapers stay in contact with the skin for too long, they can cause irritation. Babies with diarrhea are more susceptible to diaper rash.
  • Friction: Tight diapers or clothing can lead to redness and irritation.
  • New products: The baby's skin may react to newly used wipes, diapers, or detergents.
  • Yeast and bacterial infections: A simple infection may spread across the skin. Since the diaper area is warm and humid, it creates a good environment for bacteria and yeast to grow. Skin folds in babies are also susceptible to rashes.
  • New foods: As your baby begins eating solid foods, the content of their stools changes, which can lead to diaper rash. With an increase in feeding frequency, stools also become more frequent, raising the risk of rash. In breastfed babies, diaper rash can develop as a reaction to something the mother has eaten.
  • Sensitive skin: Babies with other skin conditions, like atopic dermatitis, may be more prone to diaper rash.
  • Antibiotics: Antibiotics kill bacteria that help control yeast growth, allowing yeast to increase. Babies on antibiotics are also at a higher risk of diarrhea. If the breastfeeding mother is on antibiotics, the baby may also be more prone to diaper rash.

What Helps Diaper Rash?

Several natural remedies may help relieve diaper rash at home, including:

  • Coconut oil: Known to kill Candida fungus, coconut oil also reduces inflammation and acts as a barrier on the skin. It can be effective if the baby is not allergic to coconut oil.
  • Apple cider vinegar: This may be beneficial for rashes caused by fungal infections. By killing bacteria responsible for redness, it prevents fungal growth. Before application, mix one part apple cider vinegar with three parts water, and use a soft cloth to gently apply it to the area.
  • Olive oil: With infection-preventing properties, olive oil can also help relieve itching. Its moisturizing effect may alleviate pain and discomfort.
  • Honey and chamomile: Mix a teaspoon of honey with two cups of chamomile tea to make a spray for the baby's rash. These ingredients have soothing and antiseptic properties.
  • Oatmeal bath: Studies suggest that an oatmeal bath can reduce irritation for types of dermatitis, as well as reduce pain and itching.
  • Breast milk: Breast milk has healing properties that can be effective for diaper rash. Its moisturizing effect makes it a good option.
  • Aloe vera gel: Aloe vera is known for its ability to reduce inflammation, making it suitable for diaper rash.
  • Taking precautions with new foods: New foods are usually beneficial for babies, but acidic foods like tomatoes may increase the irritation in urine and stools. If this happens, avoid such foods until the rash heals.
  • Avoiding certain products: Baby powder and cornstarch are not recommended as they may damage the baby’s lungs if inhaled, and cornstarch can worsen rashes caused by Candida fungus.
  • Probiotic yogurt: Natural, sugar-free probiotic yogurt can help the skin heal and is one of the natural remedies for diaper rash. Apply room-temperature yogurt to the affected area after each diaper change.
  • Drying without wiping: When changing diapers, let the area air-dry without wiping to reduce irritation. Before starting the diaper change, lay a waterproof mat under the baby.

These are home remedies that may help, but if your baby has a persistent or worsening rash, it is recommended to go to the nearest healthcare provider without delay.

How to Treat Diaper Rash?

There are several important steps to treat diaper rash effectively:

Keeping the Area Clean and Dry: One of the most essential steps to reduce redness is to keep the diaper area dry and clean. Therefore, it is crucial to change the diaper whenever it becomes wet. Being gentle when wiping during diaper changes is also important. Avoid rubbing; instead, clean the area by patting gently with a soft cloth or by rinsing with water.

Using Disposable Diapers: If you typically use washable diapers, switching to disposable and absorbent diapers during the diaper rash period can help.

Using the Right Diaper Size: Incorrectly sized diapers increase the likelihood of rash and can worsen an existing rash. A diaper that is too small can trap extra moisture and cause more rapid skin irritation, while a larger diaper can lead to friction, exacerbating the rash. Choosing the correct diaper size is therefore crucial.

Switching Diaper Brands or Detergents: If your baby frequently develops diaper rash, they may be sensitive to a particular diaper brand or detergent. Fragrances in soaps and detergents can also cause irritation. Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products.

Allowing the Rash Area to Breathe: Periodically airing out the affected area throughout the day can help. Since this may involve leaving the lower area uncovered, ensure your baby stays warm. During the rash period, try using 100% cotton fabrics instead of synthetic ones.

How to Prevent Diaper Rash?

To prevent diaper rash, consider the following steps:

  • Avoid leaving the diaper wet and change it immediately when needed,
  • Rinse the area with warm water at every diaper change,
  • Gently pat the skin dry with a soft towel or cloth,
  • Allow the baby’s bottom to be exposed to air as much as possible,
  • Ensure the diaper is the correct size,
  • Use hypoallergenic detergent for washing baby’s clothes and linens,
  • Introduce new foods in small amounts and observe the baby for any reactions,
  • Dress the baby in comfortable, non-tight clothing,
  • Wash your hands before and after each diaper change.

If you notice symptoms of diaper rash on your baby, consult a healthcare provider to receive treatment recommendations. Following the appropriate treatment method can help the rash heal quickly.
